FAMILY MOVE
QUESTION:
I have been having
some problems with my 6 year old boy in school lately. I do not know how to
handle it or get him to listen while I am not there. What should I do?
Answer::
There is very
little for me to go on here. There could be a number of things involved:
• Is your son experiencing separation anxiety? Has he been close to you and
not had outside relationships before now?
• Is your son rebelling for some reason? He could be angry that you leave
him at school. Or he could find the lessons boring, too simple or too hard.
• Is your son being resistant to seek attention? He might not know of other
ways to be treated as ‘special.’
• Is your son dealing with some fears or phobias?
• Do you feel the teacher is not capable of handling the problem? Or did she
complain to you?
There are number of ways to deal with the problem. First, you might discuss
your son’s behavior with the teacher to get her ideas. Try not be
defensive... this problem is not uncommon. Ask if the problem is a passing
phase or if she thinks it is so serious to warrant deep concern. Then ask
her for suggestions for ways to follow up with your son.
You might have your son tested as to his level of abilities. Or take him to
the school counselor. Or maybe to a hearing test.
Meanwhile, sit back and ask yourself if the problem is a danger to your
son’s survival. Are his basic physical needs met? Is he secure in his
identity and sense of self? Is he fitting in with other children? Is he
being intellectually challenged?
If these main objectives are being met, this may be a minor issue to be
concerned about. Talk to your son. Ask him what is going on at school.
Reassure him of your love. And be grateful you have him.
